If you are interested in learning about food production, Cotton Hills farm is a great resource.
The farm, wich has been owned and operated by the Wilson family since 1882, produces cotton, corn, wheat, hay, timber, fruits and vegetables. And, if you are truly a South Carolina food afficiando, you will love that Cotton Hills Farm produces grits milled right there on the farm in a grist mill dating back to 1905. The grits are made from the farms' own non-genetically altered, open-pollen corn. You can purchase these grits, along with other produce from the farm, at their store located on-site.
Cotton Hills Farm operates on an environmentally friendly no-till system which decreases their impact on the soil. Owner Jeff Wilson also loves to give tours of the farm to help educate local children about the importance of farming and the way that food is produced. Each fall thousands of school children visit the farm for a farm tour, complete with a visit with the farm's animals and a venture through the corn maze. If you have kids, Cotton Hills Farm provides a 'fun day on the farm' every Saturday in October, where you can expect a wagon ride, a visit with the barnyard animals, and a 'pumpkin catapult,' which launches pumpkins over a thousand feet into the air. Take a day next fall to teach your kids a little bit about their local food producer and have a blast while doing so.
Cotton Hills Farm is operated by owners Jeff and Carol Wilson, along with their son's JEB and Peter, their daughter Brooke, and their daughter- and son-in-law Jane and Matt.
